Anthropic Backers Eye Multi-Billion Dollar Windfalls Ahead of Potential $2 Trillion Listing
Early and late-stage investors in the AI lab stand to gain massive returns as the company approaches a public market debut this year.

The artificial intelligence sector has long been a breeding ground for extraordinary financial gains, but few entities currently rival the trajectory of Anthropic. As the company prepares for a public listing expected later this year, the financial implications for its backers are becoming increasingly clear. With a projected valuation that could reach as high as $2 trillion, the upcoming IPO is set to create a significant windfall for both early-stage risk-takers and later-stage institutional investors. Even at the firm's most recent private market valuation of $965 billion, the stakes held by many venture capitalists and founding supporters already represent billions of dollars in wealth.
The scale of these potential returns is difficult to overstate. According to data cited by Bloomberg, the value of holdings for key investors has surged dramatically since their initial entries into the company. These figures reflect the rapid appreciation of Anthropic’s equity in a market that has valued AI leadership with increasing aggressiveness. For several prominent figures and firms, the difference between their entry price and the current private valuation represents a transformation in personal or institutional net worth that underscores the intensity of the current tech boom.
Among the most notable beneficiaries is Eric Schmidt, the former chief executive of Google. Schmidt entered the venture during the Series A round in 2021, a period when the startup was valued at just $461 million according to PitchBook data. At that time, the investment was a strategic bet on emerging technology. Today, his ownership stake stands at approximately 1% of the company. Even before an official IPO, that modest percentage equates to a value nearing $10 billion, illustrating the explosive growth of his initial position.
Late-stage giants have also reaped substantial rewards from their massive capital injections. Iconiq, an investment firm, wrote a check for $6 billion to Anthropic last year when the company was already valued at $183 billion. This significant late-stage bet has since grown to a value of $17 billion. If the company achieves its projected $2 trillion valuation in the public markets, analysts suggest this investment could double again, further cementing Iconiq’s status as a major winner in the AI landscape.
Menlo Ventures, which led the company’s Series D funding, has been a long-term supporter, investing more than $1 billion over several years. This cumulative investment now represents a stake worth $14 billion. Similarly, Sequoia, the renowned venture capital firm, made its first move into Anthropic earlier this year. At that time, the company was valued at $380 billion. Sequoia’s $3 billion investment secured roughly 1% ownership, meaning the firm has already more than doubled its initial capital outlay in a matter of months.
The list of wealthy backers also includes Sound Ventures, the firm co-founded by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher. Sound Ventures initially invested $35 million in the 2023 Series C round and has since added another $400 million to its position. This combined investment has resulted in a stake currently valued in the billions. It is worth noting that Kutcher departed from Sound Ventures earlier this year to establish a new venture capital firm, though the original investment remains a major asset for the company.
Perhaps the most dramatic multiple belongs to Spark Capital, the only venture capital firm known to hold a board seat at Anthropic. The firm invested $75 million during the same 2023 Series C round, when the company’s valuation was $5 billion. Since then, that position has ballooned more than ninetyfold. Today, Spark Capital’s stake is valued at $7 billion, a testament to the extraordinary leverage provided by early access to high-growth technology companies.
The stakes for these investors are not merely financial; they represent a significant portion of the broader AI narrative. As Anthropic moves closer to a public debut, the performance of these early and late-stage bets will serve as a benchmark for the entire sector. The sheer magnitude of the returns, ranging from nearly $10 billion for an individual to multi-billion dollar stakes for established firms, highlights the high-risk, high-reward nature of investing in the next generation of technology leaders. For California’s tech ecosystem, which hosts many of these players, the outcome of this IPO will likely resonate well beyond the company’s own walls.
